Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Session 01: The Battle of Greenest

After rescuing The Swift Family our party was greeted with thanks. Although the city of Greenest was still in the very process of being ransacked and burned around them, they had earned a moment of respite in an isolated crossing of streets near the north-eastern section of the city. Linan, the mother of the family, told the group that they were on their way to the keep at the center of the village. It was the only place where the family felt they would be safe.

The group was reluctant to travel there, due of a black dragon which had been recently circling overhead. However, the dragon had since disappeared and the keep seemed as if it had barely been touched, so our heroes journeyed there, fearful of the danger in the ravaged city around them.

They journeyed further towards the center of the town and saw a wagon being loaded by Kobolds and an Acolyte. Our party quickly dispatched the kobolds with the help of the mysterious Half-Elf Warlock, Dyvim Tvar and captured the Acolyte. The Acolyte was charmed by Extacy, and divulged that he was a follower of the mysterious Cult of the Dragon, who were in possession of an entire hatchery of dragons. He promised he would tell them more if only he could see what riches lie in the Greenest Keep, however negotiations went south when Karamak ruthlessly murdered him. Even more bad news awaited the group when they realized the horse-drawn cart, whose contents were unknown slipped away from their grasp while they weren’t looking.

Fortunately, they were able to track down the cart utilizing The Exterminator‘s expert tracking skills. The Kobold who had absconded with the cart had managed to inform another group of Kobolds led by another Acolyte. The group attempted to surprise the second group of raiders, with little success. Ma’ati jumped on the horse pulling the cart in an attempt to escape with the creature, however the Acolyte cast a spell over him before he could get away.

The Acolyte, named Beaufort FoxTail controlled Ma’ati forcing him to ride off into the waiting hands of the enemy. Seeing the group was more resourceful and potentially useful to his ends he dismissed his kobold entourage and negotiated with the group. He promised to release their friend and tell them the location of the hatchery if he could take a peek inside of the keep. According to Beaufort the cult was simply gathering gold in order to resurrect their god, Tiamat. He knew he would be rewarded if he plundered the most gold and believed, like many of the cult that the greatest spoils would be locked up there.

The Heroes reluctantly agreed to take him with them and within moments had reached the entrance of the Keep. Upon entering the keep a huge iron gate and a large wooden drawbridge protected them from the dangers of the surrounding city. Not long afterwards they were greeting by Governor Tarbrow Nighthill who was badly hurt and struggling to protect the remaining survivors of greenest. Aiding him was Sergeant Markguth a burly well-known hero of the town and Castellan Escobert the Red a battle worn shield dwarf who seemed constantly in a drunken stupor.

Escobert explained the layout of the keep, explaining that most of the women and children were held securely in the cellar beneath the keep, which may possibly hold a secret escape passage. The shield dwarf then took the prisoner into the back room and began to question him as the Heroes toured the keep. No sooner had the group peered over the top of the keep walls had they seen a party of hundreds of kobolds approaching. The army of Kobolds marched around the keep walls in a parade of death with their prisoner, Ma’ati in front of them.

It was then that an explosion rocked the Sally Port of the Keep. The Kobolds rushed away from their prisoner and into the keep through the gaping door-sized hole in the wall. In the ensuing chaos Beaufort FoxTail escaped, but so was Ma’ati. Using a rope the heroes threw from the top of the Keep, Ma’ati was able to scale the wall and reunite with them.

The keep is now under attack and although Tarbrow, Sergent, Escobert and the remaining forces of the Greenest volunteer security forces can keep the attacking kobolds at bay, they won’t be able to stem the tide unless someone can mend the hole in the Sally Port.
