Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Session 00: The World's End Tavern

Our adventures awoke in the bed of their Tavern, The World’s End, and congregate to eat a hearty breakfast in preparation for the final day-long leg of their journey. Their destinations seemed, as if by fate, to all be the same: Greenest. Despite their vastly different temperaments the group of 6 adventurers: Blacktalons, Extacy, Karamak, Ma’ati, The Exterminator, and Vladislak Oakenheel agreed to journey together.

Before leaving, Karamak berated and stole from the the Tavernkeeper, Baron Von Lich as he often did. However, Extacy took a more diplomatic route by conversing with him in a manner befitting his former title of Baron. Vladislak Oakenheel took a more diplomatic route by bestowing gifts and a blessing upon him earning him a potion in return for his kindness.

The party then left the safety of the World’s end Tavern and traveled until the sun began to set. As they arrived, they saw that the village was set ablaze and being heavily pillaged by Kobolds and an unknown group of Cultists

As they approached the Village the party came across The Swift Family who were being attacked by a nasty group of Kobolds. The adventurers valiantly fought off the attackers and saved the entire family without so much as a scratch.

The Swift family now healed and armed advised the group to head to the Greenest Village Keep. Previously a Black Dragon had taken residence in the sky above the heavily armed fortress but had recently disappeared.

Session 01: The Battle of Greenest

After rescuing The Swift Family our party was greeted with thanks. Although the city of Greenest was still in the very process of being ransacked and burned around them, they had earned a moment of respite in an isolated crossing of streets near the north-eastern section of the city. Linan, the mother of the family, told the group that they were on their way to the keep at the center of the village. It was the only place where the family felt they would be safe.

The group was reluctant to travel there, due of a black dragon which had been recently circling overhead. However, the dragon had since disappeared and the keep seemed as if it had barely been touched, so our heroes journeyed there, fearful of the danger in the ravaged city around them.

They journeyed further towards the center of the town and saw a wagon being loaded by Kobolds and an Acolyte. Our party quickly dispatched the kobolds with the help of the mysterious Half-Elf Warlock, Dyvim Tvar and captured the Acolyte. The Acolyte was charmed by Extacy, and divulged that he was a follower of the mysterious Cult of the Dragon, who were in possession of an entire hatchery of dragons. He promised he would tell them more if only he could see what riches lie in the Greenest Keep, however negotiations went south when Karamak ruthlessly murdered him. Even more bad news awaited the group when they realized the horse-drawn cart, whose contents were unknown slipped away from their grasp while they weren’t looking.

Fortunately, they were able to track down the cart utilizing The Exterminator‘s expert tracking skills. The Kobold who had absconded with the cart had managed to inform another group of Kobolds led by another Acolyte. The group attempted to surprise the second group of raiders, with little success. Ma’ati jumped on the horse pulling the cart in an attempt to escape with the creature, however the Acolyte cast a spell over him before he could get away.

The Acolyte, named Beaufort FoxTail controlled Ma’ati forcing him to ride off into the waiting hands of the enemy. Seeing the group was more resourceful and potentially useful to his ends he dismissed his kobold entourage and negotiated with the group. He promised to release their friend and tell them the location of the hatchery if he could take a peek inside of the keep. According to Beaufort the cult was simply gathering gold in order to resurrect their god, Tiamat. He knew he would be rewarded if he plundered the most gold and believed, like many of the cult that the greatest spoils would be locked up there.

The Heroes reluctantly agreed to take him with them and within moments had reached the entrance of the Keep. Upon entering the keep a huge iron gate and a large wooden drawbridge protected them from the dangers of the surrounding city. Not long afterwards they were greeting by Governor Tarbrow Nighthill who was badly hurt and struggling to protect the remaining survivors of greenest. Aiding him was Sergeant Markguth a burly well-known hero of the town and Castellan Escobert the Red a battle worn shield dwarf who seemed constantly in a drunken stupor.

Escobert explained the layout of the keep, explaining that most of the women and children were held securely in the cellar beneath the keep, which may possibly hold a secret escape passage. The shield dwarf then took the prisoner into the back room and began to question him as the Heroes toured the keep. No sooner had the group peered over the top of the keep walls had they seen a party of hundreds of kobolds approaching. The army of Kobolds marched around the keep walls in a parade of death with their prisoner, Ma’ati in front of them.

It was then that an explosion rocked the Sally Port of the Keep. The Kobolds rushed away from their prisoner and into the keep through the gaping door-sized hole in the wall. In the ensuing chaos Beaufort FoxTail escaped, but so was Ma’ati. Using a rope the heroes threw from the top of the Keep, Ma’ati was able to scale the wall and reunite with them.

The keep is now under attack and although Tarbrow, Sergent, Escobert and the remaining forces of the Greenest volunteer security forces can keep the attacking kobolds at bay, they won’t be able to stem the tide unless someone can mend the hole in the Sally Port.

Session 02: Keeping the Keep

Our Heroes are reunited, but under dire straits! After rescuing Ma’ati from the clutches of the hoard of Kobalts, they witness the army began trickling into the keep from the hole blasted in the sally port .

Unknown to the group, Blacktalons, has also aware of the hole in the Sally port. Although he had earlier abandoned the group to look for signs of the mysterious black dragon, he had lost sight of the creature and opted instead to rejoin them at the Keep. Finding the entrance firmly sealed shut, he walked around the keep until he discovered the blast hole in the sally port. However this discovery was made only shortly after Beaufort FoxTail made his escape and just before the army of Kobalts found it as well.

Back on the walls of the keep, Extacy, Ma’ati, Karamak and The Exterminator jump from the wall to face the hoard and protect the survivors as much as possible. Most of them slide down a rope of a construction crane to the Keep courtyard, however The Exterminator misses the rope, landing comically in a pile of hay. However, Dyvim Tvar stays on the keep walls fighting back with powerful magic.

It is then that the adventurers see Blacktalons as he fights valiantly against an Ambush Drake and an Acolyte who have made their way through the sally port. Outnumbered and out classesBlacktalons manages to put the Ambush Drake to sleep and retreats. However, with the help of Extacy and Sergeant Markguth he manages to fight back the forces threatening to overwhelm the keep.

In the courtyard The Exterminator, Dyvim Tvar, Governor Tarbrow Nighthill, Castellan Escobert the Red, and several survivors of Greenest fight valiantly against the Kobalts. However, trouble comes when Karamak is overwhelmed and defeated by a gang of three kobalts who surround him. Fortunately The Exterminator sees his lifeless body and brings him back to life.

At this point Castellan Escobert the Red recognizes the tide of the battle is turning in their favor, however he know it won’t last unless they can seal the sally port. Fortunately, Sergeant Markguth, who had proved himself a highly competent warrior in battle knows the mend spell. While it takes quite some time Blacktalons and Extacy are able to defend him until he can finish the spell and reseal the sally port.

Meanwhile a dragon encircles the keep, occasionally opening a blast of acid and melting several Greenest villagers perched on the wall. The remaining warriors finish the battle as Dyvim Tvar uncovers a functioning catapult, Castellan Escobert the Red has affectionately named “Suzie.” However, before he can use the weapon the dragon again vanishes into the night.

Once all enemies have been defeated and no sign of the Black Dragon can be seen, Extacy fills her bag of linking with 6 cannon balls, 20 large bloody stones, 6 irons bars, 1 deceased kobald, 2 alcolite corpses, and the decaying body of a headless ambush drake, and cultist.

It’s at this point the group decides to take a rest in the keep’s cellar where surviving families of Greenest village huddled in fear. In rear of the storage room the group spots a mysterious pile of boxes next to a fountain being filled from a grate of water. It’s behind this grate Castellan Escobert the Red claims there is a secret passageway by a river. But he seems reluctant to grant the heroes access, even though he recalls distinctly hiring The Exterminator to clear the passageway of rodents and pests.
